Dreams - Initial Thoughts Behind The Project

Updated: May 4, 2021

I went to sleep; and now I am refresh’d,

A strange refreshment: for I feel in me

An inexpressive lightness, and a sense

Of freedom…

How still it is!

I hear no more the busy beat of time,

No, nor my fluttering breath, nor my struggling pulse;

Nor does one moment differ from the next.

- The Dream of Gerontius

I find the world of dreams so fascinating in the way that they offer their recipient an escape from reality and a window into a new world. It can be seen above in, John Henry Newman’s, The Dream of Gerontius, that they offer the dreamer a sense of freedom from the business and humdrum of life. It is these ideas of escapism and the concept of “dream time” which has fuelled my fascination and led me to think more about the phenomena of dreams and some of the ways I can creatively visualise this.
